What’s Makes the Mullayanagiri Peak so Special?

The Mullayanagiri Peak is located in the Western Ghats, in the Baba Budan Giri Range of mountains. It’s Karnataka’s highest peak at an elevation of 1,930 meters (6,330 feet). Atop this peak, are spectacular panoramic views of the Western Ghats, the Baba Budan Giri range of mountains, the Shola forests and coffee plantations in the distance. Very close to the summit of the peak, lies the Mullappa Swamy Temple, dedicated to sage Mullappa, who used to meditate there in the past.

The trek to Mullayanagiri Peak is one of the most famous because it is properly accessible to both seasoned and inexperienced trekkers. The trek is considered to be a moderate to difficult trek, but based on one’s experience and fitness levels, it may vary.


Here are some of the essential details you need to know about the trek:

Best Time to Visit:

The best months to visit the Mullayanagiri Peak are from the months of September to April. Thereafter, the monsoons begin and the trail might not be in a safe condition for trekkers.


How to Get There:

You can get to get to the peak by road, which has direct access by vehicle. Nevertheless, to the top most point of the peak, you will have to hike about 500 steps. The other route is by trekking a trail from the starting point Sarpadari, to the peak.


Entry Fees and Timings:

There is no entry fee to trek to Mullayanagiri Peak. The trek is open 24 hours, but it is not advisable to trek after dark to avoid any mishaps. Therefore, early morning departure to early evening return is advisable.


Trek Duration and Trail Details:

The trek duration is about half a day from the base of the peak – Sarpadari. It should take you about 3 to 4 hours, to reach the summit, depending on your pace and stops. The trek to the peak is about 3.5 kilometers and a climb of 500 steps to the peak point.The initial part of the trek has a rather steep trail and only gets steeper. You will find shrubs, bushes and jagged rocks along the way.


What to Pack:

You will need to carry some snacks/food, water, a jacket and cap and a first-aid kit. Make sure to wear proper shoes or trekking boots and apply sunscreen.
